Grip Maintenance & Injury Resilience Protocol Designed for climbers to maintain strength, improve tendon resilience, and reduce injury risk. Why Train Grip Outside of Climbing? Hard climbing places extremely high loads on the fingers, wrists and forearms. While climbing naturally develops grip strength, it doesn't always provide the consistent, progressive loading that tendons and connective tissues need to remain healthy over the long term. This maintenance program is designed to supplement climbing-not replace it. By training at 50-70% of your maximum capability, you stimulate the muscles and tendons enough to maintain strength while promoting tissue adaptation with minimal fatigue. Regular training can help: Maintain climbing-specific grip strength Improve tendon and pulley resilience Increase forearm endurance Improve wrist stability Reduce the risk of overuse injuries Improve recovery between climbing sessions Unlike maximum-strength training, this protocol emphasizes quality movement, controlled repetitions, and consistent volume rather than heavy loads. Training Protocol This protocol assumes that you have determined your MSL. This protocol is designed for use with an OGC Cassette. Frequency: 2-3 sessions per week Allow at least 48 hours between sessions. Train after climbing or on a separate day. Intensity: 50-70% of your MSL The final repetitions should feel challenging while allowing perfect control. 1. Half Crimp Flat Edge Load Hold Rest Repetitions Sets 60-70% MSL 5 seconds 3 seconds 10 3 2. Open Hand Grip Stepped Edge Load Hold Rest Repetitions Sets 55-65% MSL 5 seconds 3 seconds 12 3 3. Full Crimp Flat Edge Use only after warming up thoroughly. Load Hold Rest Repetitions Sets 50-60% MSL 3-4 seconds 5 seconds 8 2 Lower training volume reflects the increased stress placed on the finger pulleys. 4. Pinch Grip Use any comfortable grip width. Load Hold Rest Repetitions Sets 60-70% MSL 5 seconds 3 seconds 10 3 Alternate grip widths between sessions. 5. Wrist & Forearm Conditioning Adjust the device to an appropriate resistance. Each repetition should be smooth and controlled. Wrist Flexion ⇄ Extension Load Repetitions Sets 60% MSL 15 3 One complete repetition includes both flexion and extension. Pronation ⇄ Supination Load Repetitions Sets 60% MSL 15 3 Rotate slowly in both directions. Radial ⇄ Ulnar Deviation Load Repetitions Sets 60% MSL 15 3 Move through a comfortable range and don’t force the movement. Progression This is a maintenance and injury-prevention program—not a maximal strength program. Progress only when all repetitions feel smooth and recovery is complete within 24-48 hours. Progress in this order: Improve movement quality. Increase hold time (5 → 8 seconds). Increase repetitions (10 → 15). Increase resistance in small increments (≈5%). Reduce training volume during periods of intense climbing or if soreness persists for more than two days.
